Principles
with purpose
01
Go as One.
Good design takes collaboration. I encourage my team and cross-functional partners to create a one-team mentality that shares accountability and activities across the product design lifecycle, from kicking off new intent to evaluating performance post-launch, to ensure we’re all going on the journey together.
02
Diversify
thought.
The death to creativity is sameness. In order for us to deliver world-class experiences, we need to set the stage for diversity of thought. This means building teams with different skills and backgrounds, embracing cross-functional ideation and problem-solving, and looking for inspiration in unexpected places.
03
Spend time together.
The most important thing I can do is to show up for my team, to help them plot the course for growth, to share my strategic perspective, and to coach them when things aren’t going as planned. If I do that well, my impact scales. I prioritize spending time with my team – longer 1-on-1’s, weekly design jams, and optional office hours to get hands on with their work when needed.
04
Activate on
feedback.
Feedback is the only path to improvement – in our designs and in our performance. As a I leader, I help the team embrace feedback by setting up routine design critiques with our design team and with partners, hosting monthly development conversations with each team member, and inviting my team to tell me often how they think I can show up better for them.
05
There are
no rules.
Okay, there are certainly rules – especially when designing for established brands. Part of the art of design is knowing when and how to break the rules to drive bigger impact. Deviating from the norm of an experience can highlight a key change, create focus on critical info, or celebrate a special moment for the user. Break the rules wisely.
